Many people work full time making appearances in the Ronald McDonald costume, visiting children in hospitals and brighten up their days. There are also Ronald McDonald Houses, where parents can stay overnight when visiting sick children in nearby chronic care facilities. Since August 2003, McDonald has been officially recognized as the "Chief Happiness Officer" of the McDonald`s Corporation. Ronald McDonald is a clown who is the primary mascot of the McDonald`s fast-food restaurant chain. The McDonald`s Corporation has also characterized Ronald McDonald as being able to speak 31 different languages including Mandarin, Dutch, Tagalog, and Hindi. According to the book Fast Food Nation (2001), 96% of school children in the United States can identify Ronald McDonald, making him the United States` most recognized fast food advertising icon. Only Santa Claus was more commonly recognized. In television commercials, the clown inhabits a fantasy world called McDonaldland, and has adventures with his friends Hamburglar, Grimace, Birdie the Early Bird, and The Fry Kids.

According to a famous advertising jingle, it consists of "two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun", though the most distinctive feature is a middle layer of bread used to stabilize contents and prevent spillage. The Big Mac sandwich is a type of cheeseburger, a signature sandwich sold by the McDonald`s chain of fast-food restaurants since 1968, made with beef patties, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onion, with a "special sauce" and a sesame seed bun. Tasty and filling, the Big Mac meal is just one of the many selections we offer here at McDonald`s. The Big Mac was invented in 1967 in Uniontown, Pennsylvania by Jim Delligatti, an alumnus of Michigan State University`s School of Hospitality Business and one of McDonald`s franchisees. Customer response to the Big Mac was so good that it rolled-out nationally in 1968. The Premium Crispy Chicken Club is also a delectable item on the menu.
